Q. What is the cost per square foot to complete my basement?
A. You should have a budget of at least forty dollars, per square foot. Each basement is unique. Cost will be based on the amenities you would like to have in your custom finished basement (bathrooms, wet bars, fireplace, home theatre) and the finishes you choose (flooring, trim).
Q. What is the minimum size project you will work on?
A. Because we specialize in custom basements we like to work on projects with at least 700 square feet of finished space.
Q. How does finishing my basement affect the resale of my home?
A. Research has shown that a quality finished basement and a good design will greatly enhance your ability to sell your home. We encourage you to talk to a local realtor to get a true assessment of your home after you have finished your basement.
Q. How long will it take to finish my basement?
A. The average basement takes 10 to 12 weeks to complete. Based on your amenities it could take more or less.
Q. Do I need to get a permit? Who pulls the permit?
A. Yes, you need to have a permit. Finished Basements Plus will obtain the permit and call in all the inspections. Your local municipality requires you to obtain a permit to ensure your safety. Many homeowner’s insurance companies will not provide coverage for projects that are completed without a permit.
Q. Will construction be messy?
A. Yes, expect your basement and home to get dusty. We try very hard to eliminate the dust and keep your home as clean as possible. We clean up the job site daily before leaving.
Q. Do I need to have an egress window?
A. Yes. State law requires that every basement with habitable living space must have at least one egress window. For more information contact the State of Michigan or your local building department.
Q. I am concerned about mold and keeping my basement warm and dry. Are there products on the market that address my concerns?
A. Yes, there are many products specially designed for finishing basements to make them warm, dry and healthy. When we meet, we will discuss in detail how we will build your basement to achieve a warm, cozy, and healthy environment.
