Tips For Creating a Workout Room In Your Basement

If you've been thinking about trimming down and toning up, you are probably worried about where to get your workout on.  If your jobs keeps you working on a tight schedule, you might not have the time to drive or walk to a gym and then do your workout.  If you need something more convenient and you've got a basement, with just a bit of time and money, you can turn that extra space into your very own personal gym.

First you need to figure out what you have to work with.  The ceiling height is very important - some basements have ceilings so low you won't be able to run on a treadmill, not to mention climb a StairMaster.  You'll also want to measure the dimensions of the room - how much square footage do you have?  The smaller the space, the less heavy equipment you'll be able to fit.  (Determine square footage by multiplying the length of the room by the width.)

You should also consider ventilation. Does your basement have windows or an air conditioner? And just as important if you live in a place with very cold winters, do you get heat down there?

Next you'll want to think about what kind of equipment you want to buy.  Consider your personal goals.  Do you need cardiovascular machines or just weights and benches?  Do you like to use free weights or weight lifting machines? 

Now figure out based on what you need and how big the room is, what equipment you need to purchase.  If you're looking to lose weight, you probably should invest in a treadmill, but if you're in a small space, make sure it's one that can easily fold up and rest against the wall, so you can use the floor space.  If you don't want to spend too much money, look for used ones at lower prices online.  Just don't forget to plug it in and test it before handing over the cash!

These are the basics, and you can certainly stop here. But depending on how time you plan to spend down there, you might consider adding in a few amenities to make the room more comfortable.  A clock on the wall to time your exercise might be helpful, and a decent sound system can also make working out more fun.  Some people also put in water coolers or mini-fridges.


And there's no reason to stop there! Paint the walls bright colors or plaster them with motivational quotes and photos.  Put up mirrors so you can watch your form.  Add a television if it's your preference. The beauty of building your own gym is that its yours, and it can be anything you want.
