A common question that we are asked is “Do I need to get a building permit to finish my basement?” The answer is Yes, and here’s why.
A renovation project such as a basement remodel or basement finishing often require many different components that should be inspected during construction. Things such as electrical, plumbing, and HVAC should all be inspected to make sure they are done to code. Checking a contractors work during construction is easy as the walls and ceiling are still open and accessible. If an issue arises or the city notices that permits were not pulled and requires an inspection at any point after construction, walls and ceilings may need to be removed to check the work which could cost a lot of money and time for you in the end.
A company that will pull permits is reassuring you that they will be following local building codes as the work will be inspected throughout the process. The company will most likely be willing to pull the permits on your behalf which makes the process even easier. If a company is requesting not to pull permits, they may skip corners or do things incorrectly. In the end, pulling permits for a finished basement will give you peace of mind that the project is done safely and correctly.
