Finished Basements Plus Case Studies: Open Rail Staircase Installed in Macomb, MI Basement

Monday, June 6th, 2016 by Adam Jensen

Challenge

The staircase in this finished basement was nearly right in the middle of the finished space. Due to this, the staircase created a separation between the two sides of the lower level that made the whole space feel smaller and blocked off. Our challenge was to find a way to create a more open feel between these two sides.

Solution

Opening up the sides of the staircase into an Open Rail Staircase allows sightlines from either side of the space as well as an inviting feel when entering or leaving the lower level. The lower level now feels much more open than before as well as still having the separation of spaces without the walls.
