A: The stack effect (also known as the chimney effect) is simply air coming in and out of your home. Warm air rises and escapes out the roof as new cool air enters in the basement and first floor. This is important because it explains one of the main reasons basements can develop moisture problems.
As humid air from outside comes in through the cool ground it is cooled and can cause water to condense on surfaces inside the basement – usually basement walls. This is much like leaving a glass of water out on a hot humid day; water condenses on the outside of the glass. This effect is therefore a major reason why so many basements and crawl spaces are damp and humid.
A: Mold spores are everywhere and there is no practical way to eliminate them from your home. But you can keep mold from gaining a foothold in your basement by selecting materials that do not absorb moisture. Mold looks terrible and is a health concern. A: State law requires that all finished basements must have means of egress (a way to get out of the basement other than using the stairs). If you have a walkout basement you already meet the requirement. If you do not have a walkout basement, an egress window will need to be installed.
