How Do You Build a Basement Man Cave?

Create that one of a kind space you have always wanted by designing a basement man cave.

Has there always been a missing space in your home? Your kids have taken over the living room and your dining room is being used for home schooling? You need a place to simply relax and entertain family and friends. That is when a basement man cave comes in. The basement of your home can be transformed into the space of your choosing. In this case, a dedicated man cave. Since it is a separate space in your home, you can design the man cave to be a one of a kind space.

What is the purpose of a man cave?

A man cave is a space that is dedicated to adults. Man Caves are an escape from the other areas of your home. A place dedicated to your favorite hobby, watching the big game with friends, and entertaining guests. Typically created within the basement for extra space, a man cave is a go-to spot for relaxation.

Over the years man caves have developed into more of a multi-functional space for the entire family, but the traditional man cave still exists. Being the most likely room in the entire house that you have complete design control over, we will be sharing some of our knowledge to create the perfect man cave.

What every man cave should have?

When it comes to creating a man cave, there are a few things that no space should go without. Let’s call this the Man Cave Starter kit:

  • Large TV
  • Comfortable Seating
  • A Home Bar Area
  • Pool Table or Ping Pong Table

Those items will get your man cave started. You will be ready to host the next get together or enjoy your own space.

From there, you can go as far as your imagination takes you. We have worked with homeowners to create everything from indoor hockey rinks to dedicated home theaters complete with multiple rows of seating.

How big should a man cave be?

There is no minimum or maximum size for a man cave. Although, the size of the space will need to be big enough to fit everything that you want. We suggest creating a must-have list before starting any project. List out your top priorities that need to be in the space, that way when you’re working with a designer, they can lay everything out to create a floor plan. Having your priorities in place will ensure a smoother process when it comes to design.

Keep in mind the requirements of certain spaces. Bars and bathrooms will need plumbing hookups. Does your home theater space need extra wiring for speakers and multiple components? Will you need to keep any space unfinished for storage?

What color should I paint my man cave?

This is completely up to you! Personalization is one of the best things about having a man cave. You can choose a color scheme to instantly emphasize the overall design theme or use decorations to add design. Many homeowners will choose a neutral color such as grey or light beige for the basement, then decorate the space to add pops of color.

How do you decorate a man cave?

One of the best things about a man cave is that it is completely up to you when it comes to decorating. Having a completely separate space from the rest of your home can make for some fun decorating styles! Of course, there are trends that we see when it comes to man caves. Below are some of the more popular themes for basement man caves that we have created over the years in Michigan.
